WHY YOUR TOWELS SMELL EVEN AFTER WASHING

5. Fabric Softener Can Trap Odors

Fabric softener coats towel fibers with a thin layer that reduces absorbency. Over time, this coating can also trap body oils and bacteria.
Tip: Skip the fabric softener for towels or use it only occasionally if softness is a priority.

6. Water Temperature Matters

Warm or hot water is generally more effective than cold water at removing body oils and bacteria from towels. Always check the care label before selecting a wash temperature.
Tip: White towels and most cotton bath towels can usually be washed in warm or hot water, while colored towels often do best in warm water to reduce fading.

How to Refresh Smelly Towels

If your towels already have an odor, try this simple refresh routine:
  • Wash the towels in hot water without detergent and add one cup of white vinegar.
  • Wash them again using the recommended amount of detergent.
  • Dry them completely before folding.
  • Make sure towels are completely dry before storing them in a linen closet.
This two-step process helps remove detergent buildup and lingering odors.

When It's Time for New Towels
